Highlights from the Past
Intention:
This exercise is an invitation to acknowledge the positive aspects of our childhood, adolescence, and adulthood up to the present. Even if our past contains a lot of pain and hardship, there were favorable elements that have helped us survive. Identifying and using these elements can help us to help others to remember their own, and to create new favorable experiences in their present.
When playing our personal and occupational roles, we can facilitate experiences and relationships that will become part of other people's good memories. When we remember what has helped us in our life, we may identify ideas that we can contribute to the lives of others.
Instruction:
On the next page, write positive memories and associations triggered by the lines identified. You can focus on a particular period in your life (for example, early childhood or adolescence), or on your past in general.
Feel free to illustrate your words with drawings, photos, etc.
Inspection:
· How easy or difficult was it for you to focus on positive memories, rather than remembering negative experiences?
· Were you surprised by a memory of something you haven't remembered in a long time?
· Have you expressed your appreciation or gratitude to those who facilitated these positive experiences from your past?
· How can remembering the positive experiences in your history contribute to your personal life in the present and beyond?
· How can you use awareness of your positive memories in your current occupational endeavors?
