Masks

Intention:

Since ancient times, people throughout the world have created and used masks as part of cultural and religious traditions. Artists, therapists, and art therapists also use masks as expressive and potentially healing instruments. The masks cover part of the face or the entire face, transforming whoever wears them into someone or something different from who they are. The mask itself conveys symbolic meanings. And the process of creating masks can spark discovery, dialogue and lessons in individuals, groups, and communities.

We invite you to become involved in this mask-making exercise, alone or in the context of your meaningful relationships.

Instruction:

Choose a comfortable place and dedicate at least an hour for the activity.

For the base of the mask, you may use pre-made ones available in craft stores, or make them from cardstock, plaster, or other lightweight material, even paper plates.

Have pens, colored pencils and markers, crayons, pastel chalks, paints and other drawing and painting tools on hand.

Use scissors, glue, and other materials that can be attached to the mask, such as paper, thread, string, fabric, feathers, beads, and small objects.

Select a theme or name for the mask, based on an issue relevant to your life. Using the theme as a guide, create the mask by drawing, painting, positioning, and bonding the selected materials and objects to its surface.

To wear the mask on your face, use elastic straps or cords to be tied around your head. You can use wooden paddles to hold the mask in your hand.

When you have completed the mask, gaze at it silently for several minutes. Place it over your face. Look in a mirror.

Reflect on the experience by talking with someone and/or writing about it responding to the following:

Inspection:

·       How did you select theme/materials/design?

·       What did you recognize or learn about yourself or the person who made the mask?

·       What feelings, thoughts, and questions were stimulated while creating the mask, and upon completion?
